It is also called as pressure ulcers/pressure sores. They’re injuries to the skin and underlying tissues, resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin.

Causes
Bed sores generally happens when blood supply to the skin is disrupted for more than 2 to 3 hours. So the causes are
- Spending lot of time sitting in a chair/ lying in a bed
- Wearing surgical appliances
Risk factors
- Being bedridden
- Diabetes

- Age(older age)

Symptoms
Bedsores are divided into 4 stages, from mild to most severe.
Stage 1:
Affected area becomes red. Patient may complain that it causes burning or itching.
Stage 2:
Affected area becomes much damaged. It may have blisters. Patient may complain that it causes pain, discomfort, and skin around it may become discoloured.
Stage 3:
Affected area gets crater like appearance due to damage below the surface of skin.
Stage 4 :
Affected area gets severely damaged and it turns into large wound. It may also involve underlying tissues, muscles, tendons, bones. Infection is quite significant at this stage.
Complications
It can lead to fever with chills. It may cause generalized weakness.
Prevention
- Turning or repositioning at every 2 to 3 hours
- Providing soft mattress to reduce the pressure
- Taking nutritious and balanced diet
- Keeping the skin clean
- Doing certain exercises that may encourage the circulation
